Colin Macfarlane is a highly popular performing poet, writer, riddler, creative writing tutor and educational consultant who is well-known for his work with able, gifted and talented (AG&T) students. Colin's skills and experience are in considerable demand around the UK and his belief that strong writing requires strong inspiration and the development of observational, as well as language and thinking skills, has led him to run thousands of workshops and courses in dramatic locations around the country.
Colin is highly experienced in working with AG&T students of all ages. For a great many years he has been at the forefront of developing and running inspirational AG&T courses for institutions around the UK, and the Times Educational Supplement and other publications have featured his work in this field.
Colin has been Director of Creative Writing Courses for able students at Kilve Court, Somerset, and the Braeside Centre, Wiltshire, for many years, and has been instrumental in creating and developing programmes of enrichment courses for AG&T students in Devon, Dorset, North Yorkshire and other areas.
Among many things, Colin has been a trainer for the National Association of Able Children in Education, has been National Year of Reading Headline Writer in Schools, and has been given many creative writing residencies and an Arts Council award.
Colin has visited many hundreds of schools to perform his own highly popular poetry and to run creative writing workshops, but the bulk of his time in recent years has been devoted to the development and delivery of exciting, challenging and motivating residential courses and summer schools for more able children, as well as lending his expertise to local education departments and other organisations who decide to set up programmes of enrichment in this field.
Directors of centres around the UK which run enrichment programmes for Able, Gifted and Talented youngsters say that Colin’s courses are consistently their most popular with students and their families, and a huge percentage of Colin’s students return again and again on further courses of his, sometimes even repeating the same courses several times. All Colin’s courses are designed to develop the underlying thinking skills required for creativity, observation skills, originality, individuality of style and content, and the development of complex language skills but, most of all, they are inspirational, challenging and fun!
Courses and workshops are usually delivered to one, two or three different year groups. These can start as young as Primary Year 3 in residential centres and go right up to A-level or adult, with suitably challenging content at each age band. In schools, Colin’s workshops for more able children run from reception class age through to A-level
